Here’s what our employees have to say about life at VLRC:

What's the most rewarding aspect of your job?
“When a client has an 'ah-ha' moment when they can do something they thought was previously impossible. Those are the best… the wins. Some are big and hard won after trying many devices over many appointments, and some are small like showing a low vision app or adding some lighting, but whenever a client is really, genuinely, thrilled with what they can now accomplish, it’s all worth it.”

Amber-Joy Boyd
Low Vision Specialist and Professional Practice Lead, Saskatchewan
Joined VLRC in 2013

Describe your role
“As an Early Intervention Specialist, I work with children, families, and community partners to address concerns and support success in the early years by helping families understand their child's vision or blindness, how it impacts development, and strategies to facilitate functional learning. My caseload consists of children aged 7 with differing abilities. Children on my caseload may have Cerebral Palsy, CVI (Cortical Visual Impairment), seizure disorders, developmental delay, autism, and genetic anomalies. No two days are the same.”

Melissa Gushnowski, Alberta
Early Intervention Specialist (EIS)
Joined VLRC in 2023

What's the most rewarding aspect of your job?
“The most rewarding aspect of my job is witnessing improved developmental changes and new skills acquired by young clients between the stages of birth to preschool. It is rewarding to see the elevated confidence of parents and caregivers as they go through the journey of learning and experiencing how their young child interacts with the world from their eyes.”

Advice to someone thinking about a career in vision rehabilitation
"It’s a unique occupation where you are included in a very small community of individuals working to help someone through what sometimes is an extremely difficult and personal struggle. Sometimes, we are not just rehab specialists attempting to provide assistance with tasks of daily living, but rather people who help someone feel that life is worth living again."

Adam Dupuis, Ontario
Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS)
Joined VLRC in 2000

Our offices and team operate in communities spanning Canada. We acknowledge that they are situated in areas that include the traditional treaty lands of the Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla in what is now Victoria, BC, and extend all the way to the lands of the Beothuk and Mi’kma’ki in St. John’s, NL.
